auCDtect Lossless Checker on Ubuntu 11.10

Icon-Desktop

When I switched from Fedora to xubuntu 11.10 in order to escape Gnome shell 3.xx I found that auCDtect which I used to check the validity of lossless files would no longer run using the tar packaged version without tweaking by installing old compat libs. Anyhow it seems that the binary inside the rpm package works even better, well it does on my xubuntu 11.10. Just open the rpm with the file roller archive manager and extract the binary file. Copy it to /usr/bin if you want.

Mint 12 and Gnome 3

Icon-ElectroCAD

It looks like the Mint devs have been listening to its users and those disgruntled with other distros. They will be using Gnome 3 in mint 12 but with an added layer customizing the desktop to a more traditional feel and use. This makes sense, no point in clinging to the Gnome 2 branch at the risk of apps going stale, but it avoids the radical change that many users where faced with at the switch from Gnome 2 to 3. This allows for a more gradual transition and not the immediate iphone tablet eye-candy style GUI that suddenly appeared in distros like Fedora 15. I know Fedora are cutting edge but they must have realised the stir such a radical change would cause.

Another Gnome 3 Refugee - Hello XFCE

Icon-Desktop

I have been a Fedora GNU/Linux user since Core 1 when it first launched and have continued to use Fedora up to release 14 which I used until it reached EOL. I have been happy with the classic Gnome desktop which is fast, configurable, pretty but no fancy stuff just for the sake of it. I have dabbled with other disro's and KDE but always ended up back with Fedora and Gnome.

I then tested Fedora 15 and did not enjoy the experience much. I found gnome 3.0 to get in my way, trying to be clever and holding my hand too much. I know some like it as they like ubuntu's Unity interface but I prefer a 'classic' desktop experience with access to a standard file manager, terminal and all my apps without having to dig around and search for them. Gnome fall-back mode is just a sticking plaster approach IMHO.

ATI Catalyst Reporting Wrong Version Under Linux

Icon-Spanner

If you update the ATI drivers in Linux via the binary package from AMD or from a repo, the ATI control panel (amdcccle) may show the older previous catalyst version.

This is because information about version is stored in /etc/ati/amdpcsdb and does not get updated when you update the drivers. Solution  is to delete this file from a terminal as root then reboot. Nest time you run amdcccle it should show the correct version installed.
